“Art is absurdity. Oil paint and charcoal is only base matter, and yet, with long hours alone in the studio the banal somehow becomes extraordinary. Although the conceptual framework of my work is always shifting, I endeavour to make the end result of a work the same: to fashion something beautiful with what crude implements I have at my disposal and what measure of expertise I may possess.”
Born in 1983 John Walters is at present reading for a Master of Fine Art degree at Rhodes University. Supervised by critically-acclaimed South African artist Christine Dixie, the basis of the Masters work is a series of paintings and drawings which attempt to deal with ‘whiteness’ in a specifically Eastern Cape context.
