1 - 30 September 2010
iArt Gallery, 71 Loop Street
A new series of monoprints by Colbert Mashile, produced in collaboration with The Artists’ Press, will be on show at iArt Gallery in the month of September. 22 works in total, the monoprints have a softer-than-usual colour palette applied to Mashile’s trademark surrealist imagery.
Each work is a unique print, with each image appearing in two works - the first pull and then the “ghost” print which often has additions made to it.
ABOUT COLBERT MASHILE
‘If one turns to Western practice Mashile’s graphic rendering of a simplified visual language marked by artificially contructed spaces, disproportion of form and flattened solid earthy colours bears some affiliation to the earlier work of Italian painter Georgio do Chirico…a precursor to the Surrealists. He rediscovers and celebrates an ancient past, but remains thoroughly contemporary.’ - Virginia MacKenny
Colbert Mashile was born in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. After his schooling, his intention was to build a career in Public Administration. Fortunately, during his studies in Pretoria, he developed a healthy fascination with art. This led him to abandon a dreary future in administration and find refuge at the Johannesburg Art Foundation. His creations have attracted attention ever since, and will continue to do so.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS’ PRESS
In 1991 The Artists’ Press print studio opened its doors under the direction of Tamarind Master Printer, Mark Attwood. The Artists’ Press started as a lithography studio providing artists in southern Africa with a workshop dedicated to the production of limited edition hand printed lithographs. The Artists’ Press has been internationally recognised for its contribution to developing the culture of printmaking in Africa.
